Biography
I won't give a very detailed biography, I wouldn't want to bore you. So here's a little bit about me. I was born in 1984 in San Francisco, CA. I have an older brother and a younger sister. If you haven't already gotten sick of hearing about me, keep on reading, but don't expect it to be too interesting.
Education
I was in the Chinese Immersion Program at West Portal Elementary School and at Hoover Middle School. I graduated from Lowell High School in 2002. I graduated with a BS in Computer Science from UC Santa Cruz in June 2006.
Outdoor Activities
I was a member of the Alpine Meadows Freestyle Ski Team for quite a few years. While on the team I traveled to Tahoe every weekend to train Saturdays and Sundays. I participated in competitions regularly and had a great time. When I was younger I was a runner. I was on the Cross Country team at Lowell during my freshman year, but stopped running due to a foot injury got got skiing. I never really got back into running after my foot got better, though I really should. Other physical activities I enjoy include mountain biking and hiking.
Travel
Over the years I've traveled to a decent number of places. Here's a list of countries I've been to outside the United States along with a bit of random stuff I remember from my trip.
- Mexico - I was really young; all I remember was getting a terrible sunburn on my back
- England - Again I was quite young, but I remember that we stayed in Oxford, and for some reason the children there thought I had an accent when clearly they had an accent and I talked normally ;-)
- Ireland - This was part of the trip to England. We took a ferry to Ireland, it was stormy, the waves were big, a lot of people were seasick. Ireland was really pretty, I ate cornflakes for breakfast at various Bed and Breakfasts. The people have a beautiful accent. The border with Northern Ireland was scary, there were men with machine guns.
- Italy - I was there for three weeks one summer. It happened to be during an incredible heat wave. We ate gelato every day. We went to a number of places including Rome, Pompei, Florence, and Venice. I got sick near Pompei, and was still sick in Florence. While sick I watched a lot of MTV International, which kept playing the Song Mm Mm Mm Mm (I don't know how they actually spell the title, this is my best guess, but you know the song I mean) by the Crash Test Dummies.
- Canada - Went to a summer Freestyle Ski camp at Whistler several times. It was a lot of fun, though I'm not sure if it was because I was in Canada or because I was hanging out and getting coached by the top freestyle skiers in the world.
- Taiwan - We stayed in Taipei for a while. I don't really remember anything much about Taipei other that it being pretty hot and humid. We took a side trip down to an incredibly beautiful area (that I can't remember the name of) with great canyons. Our tour guide dropped a group of us at a hiking trail and took the van to meet us at the other end. Along the trail we found an interesting sign which my sister and I translated into english, it said "Poison Bees". We didn't find the poison bees, but we did find spiders as big as my hand that had made big webs across the trail.
- China - I think I was there for about a week with my mom. We had our own personal tour guide and driver to take us around, which was kind of weird. We visited Beijing and Xian. The sky in Beijing was not blue, it was kind of greyish-brown. The top-of-the-line computers at the hotel were painfully slow and incredibly unreliable. It snowed when I went to the Great Wall, and I was really really cold. But while on the wall I sat on a camel, the camel was warm. In Xian we had a different tour guide and driver, who were unaware (for a while) that I know some mandarin, which was entertaining to me when they talked to eachother. Our tour guide took us to a different kind of chinese restaurant for lunch every day. All the different chinese foods were different that the chinese food I've had in the US.
Pocket Animals
There used to be a panda in my pocket. He hung around in my pockets from 2003 until 2006. He rode with me everywhere I went, usually in my left-front pants pocket, but occasionally in a shirt pocket. Some people thought he was cute. Some people were confused. The people at the Symphony gave me really weird looks. Most people just ignored him. Recently a new animal has been hanging out in my pockets. His name is Rocky and he's a raccoon. Panda still joins me occasionally, but most days he just relaxes at home.
And...
The main things I've been putting time into lately are programming and writing music. You can find out more about that in the Software section and the Music section of this site. I don't really know what else to tell you about myself here. If you really feel that you need to know more about me I guess you'll just have to meet me.
